Southeast Michigan facility ranked No. 43 by Golf Digest

CLARKSTON, Mich. (April 18, 2005) -- Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club, a wooded 27-hole facility just north of Detroit, has been selected one of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. The combination of Shepherd’s Hollow’s second and third nines ranked No. 43, placing the course ahead of such famed courses as Bay Hill, Torrey Pines, PGA West, Spanish Bay and The Greenbrier.

“We generate this ranking with the results provided by our national panel which plays and evaluates courses using seven main criteria: Shot Values, Resistance to Scoring, Design Variety, Memorability, Aesthetics, Conditioning and Ambience,” wrote Golf Digest’s Ron Whitten.

“We are pleased at the acceptance in the marketplace of Shepherd’s Hollow," says Mike Bylen, managing partner of the course. “It has always been our commitment to provide the public the best possible golfing experience. This ranking by Golf Digest is an independent opinion that Shepherd’s Hollow is a unique and high quality golfing experience for the public."

Located only 40 minutes from Detroit Shepherd's Hollow, located on dramatically rolling and wooded land near the town of Clarkston, became one of Detroit's top public golf facilities when it opened in 2000 and, although it is only 40 minutes from the city center, is reminiscent of the pristine, secluded courses of Northern Michigan.

“The 350 acres of land we built Shepherd’s Hollow on had rolling terrain with 160 feet of elevation change and absolutely beautiful oaks, maple and pines,” said golf course architect Arthur Hills. “The site is as beautiful an inland site as there is anywhere in the world. The ambience of the place is just wonderful.”

Built on land owned by the Jesuits The course is built on a 420-acre parcel of land owned by the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. In January 2002, Golf Digest ranked Shepherd's Hollow the sixth "Best New Course in the Country." Shepherd's Hollow also was selected one of Golf Magazine's "Top 10 You Can Play" in 2001.

Hidden in a forest, the charming clubhouse at Shepherd's Hollow is reminiscent of the South Carolina Low Country. The restaurant is gaining acclaim and has the kind of laid back, pleasing atmosphere that both tempts golfers to linger and draws a dining crowd of its own.
