| Gaylord, MI- Gaylord Michigan's rise as a top golf destination gains more momentum in September's issue of Golf Digest, which selected Northern Michigan as the world's 12th-best place to play golf, and 8th best in the United States. "The golf boom around Traverse City and Gaylord continues unabated," Golf Digest says. "Too many great golf courses to sample in just one trip. Mountain golf, links golf, lakeside golf - it's all here." Golf Digest chose as its top two destinations Monterey, Calif., and St. Andrews, Scotland.
The magazine polled 700 low-handicap, course-ranking panelists who were presented with a list of 95 golf-travel destinations. Among the criteria: good variety of terrific courses, a strong golf ambience, great setting, attractions and amenities, quality accommodations, etc. Golf Digest writes: "The most important question we told the panelists to ask themselves for each destination was: 'How much would a typical reader of Golf Digest enjoy a trip here?"
Northern Michigan out ranked such heralded destinations as Hawaii, Whistler Canada, and the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama.
