| The Wheeling Park District is set to unveil some of the renovations that have occurred at Chevy Chase Golf Course in Wheeling.
As of September 23, 2002, all the holes (except for 9 & 18) had been seeded with bent grass, according to the Wheeling Park District Web Site. The western side of the course has been seeded for over a month and some of the greens have already been mowed.
Weather conditions recently have been helpful to the project and the new drainage system was tested recently with our big rains and was successful at keeping the course relatively dry.
The Wheeling Park District Board of Commissioners approved a $2.2 million plan on August 21, 2001 for the redesign and renovation of Chevy Chase Golf Course located at 1000 North Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling.
The course has been closed all season and park officials are still hopeful to meet their goal of having the course open in time for the 2003 season.
Lohmann Golf Designs, Inc. of Marengo is the architect for the project. Lohmann has had his hand in many Chicago-area project recently and was the architect for the prestigeous Merit Club in Libertyville - host of the 2000 U.S. Women's Open.
The new course will feature a new layout, including redesign of all 18 holes and the construction of new greens using USGA specifications. Plans also call for bent grass fairways, an improved irrigation system, new ponds and the re-routing of the creek system.
The Wheeling Park District has owned Chevy Chase Golf Course and the accompanying clubhouse since 1977. The golf course was originally called Columbian Country Club and was built by architect Tom Bendelow in 1923.
