Golf Course Winning The Battle At Illinois State Amateur
by: Brian Ormiston - 8/16/2006 8:40:37 PM
Hinsdale’s Rob Grube fired the day’s low round to grab the lead of the Illinois State Amateur at Edgewood Valley Country Club.

Grube carded seven birdies in route to a 67 putting him at 4-under and the only player in red numbers after 36 holes. Bloomington’s Matt Miller, the 2005 Illinois State Amateur runner-up is spotting Grube four shots going into the final day.

The leaders put the peg in the ground at 8:20 a.m.Thursday morning for the start of a grueling 36 hole day. The cut line was set at eight over par 150 narrowing the field to 36 for the final day.

Edgewood Valley is playing at a tournament par of 71, turning the starting hole from a par 525 yard par 5 into a 465 yard par four.

While distance doesn’t seem to be an issue for today’s young guns, figuring out Edgewood’s greens seems to be the difference between getting into red numbers or staying in the black. Running at 11.25 on the stemp meter, the speed coupled with creative pin placements and the lack of local knowledge is putting a premium on the flat stick. Thus proving the old adage, “Drive for show, putt for dough.”

Of the players making the cut, only one with local knowledge will play the final day. Martin Bozek, one time caddy and weekend starter is tied for 7th firing dual 73’s putting him eight shots out of the lead.

If Wednesday was moving day, it’s anything can happen day on Thursday.
